Wintertime at Geneva on the Lake
As you may have noticed from the pictures above, when we go to Geneva on the Lake we like to visit the wineries of which there certainly is no shortage of.
Most people associate Geneva on the Lake with summer. After all there is a lot to do from camping to bars to wineries, to zip lining and let us not forget about the lake. When entering GOTL you experience an atmosphere that, to me, reminds me of Back to the Future mixed in with some Dirty Dancing, in other words, a more simplistic time. However while first appearances can be deceiving, reality often paints a different picture. From the large selection of local beer and live entertainment at the GOTL Brewery to the peaceful relaxing setting of the Crosswinds Grille located at the Lakehouse Inn, there is certainly no shortage of beautiful views, good food, and good times. Enough with Summer though, we are here to talk about Wintertime at GOTL.
Winter has become one of my favorite times to visit GOTL. The way I look at it is, Summer is perfect for family getaways and Winter is geared more towards couples/friends getaways, if that makes any sense. We always start our night off by stopping into our favorite restaurant located in Geneva and only a few miles from the lake, of course I am taking about the Old Mill Winery. Here you can sit by a cozy fireplace, enjoy their wine and get the best cheeseburger in the area, The Wine Burger. The mill also offers a decent selection of domestic beers and a unique look into grilling as their grill is fired up and ready to go all year round.
After dinner we normally go back to check into our room at The Lodge at Geneva on the Lake. The Lodge offers beautiful rooms coupled with beautiful views. Located on the banks of Lake Erie you can enjoy a few drinks and a meal at the Horizons Lounge, have a buffet style breakfast at the Horizons Restaurant or simply go for a refreshing peaceful walk along the frozen shores. The Lodge also offers some outdoor activities for those that have more energy than we normally do. Snow shoe and cross country ski rentals are available on site. There is also a Wine Shuttle available and can even be included in a packaged stay that we would absolutely recommend, but since we were only in town for 1 night we decided to explore on our own, perhaps we will revisit this post and update with a Wine Shuttle experience.
Our latest trip found us renting one of the cottages located on the grounds at the Lodge. Our cottage could not have been more relaxing offering a more private experience but not lacking any of the charm that we have grown accustomed to. Upon entering the cottage we were greeted with a spacious living room and kitchen combo and to our surprise a gas fireplace. Two bedrooms and a very nice bathroom complete the floorplan of the cabin.
Since our time was limited on this trip we had to pick from one of the many wineries located in the area, we chose M Cellars. I would absolutely recommend this winery. Located about 15 miles from the Lodge M Cellars was worth the trip. They offer everything I have grown to love about the wineries in the Geneva area; a warm inviting atmosphere, a staff that is knowledgeable and courteous, and most of all excellent wine. We found ourselves soaking up the warmth of the wood burning fireplace while enjoying good wine and good conversation, what more could you ask for.
If you are in need of a quick and easy getaway that offers a much needed mini-reset to your lives, I would absolutely recommend Wintertime at Geneva on the Lake.
